Lagos can be an energising base for remote work, combining a large professional network with food, culture and coastal leisure. It can also expose weak planning quickly. A beautiful apartment is not useful if video calls fail, and a busy social calendar can undermine the routine that brought you to the city. Remote workers need to evaluate accommodation as both a home and a workplace, with particular attention to internet, power, noise and location.

Choose a Neighbourhood That Supports Your Routine

Start with the places you will visit repeatedly: clients, coworking spaces, friends, gyms or events. Living close to them may be more valuable than choosing the most fashionable district. Lekki, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Yaba and Ikeja offer different tradeoffs in cost, access and atmosphere. Check journey times at the hours you actually travel.

Evaluate the Workspace, Not Just the Bedroom

Ask for photographs of the desk, chair, lighting and sockets. A dining counter may not support full working days. Confirm whether video calls can be taken privately and whether construction or nightlife noise is common. If ergonomics matter, ask whether furniture can be adjusted or bring simple accessories. City Spaces and Bookings can help remote workers compare Lagos shortlets, but specific work needs should be confirmed with the property.

Verify Internet With Practical Questions

Do not stop at “WiFi available.” Ask about the provider, typical speed, data limits and recent reliability. If possible, request a current speed test while understanding that performance can vary. Carry a second mobile network or hotspot for backup. Download key files and enable offline access before important calls. Use secure practices when working with confidential information.

Understand the Power Setup

Ask how electricity is backed up, what the backup powers and whether any schedule or extra charge applies. A small system may run lights and internet but not air conditioning or heavy appliances. Keep devices charged and use a power bank. If your role requires uninterrupted meetings, design your backup before the first workday.

Coworking Versus Working From the Apartment

An apartment provides privacy and convenience, while coworking can offer stronger infrastructure, meeting rooms and community. Many remote workers benefit from combining both. Use the apartment for deep work and a coworking space for meetings or networking. Check day passes, opening hours, call booths and internet policies before arriving.

Create Boundaries Between Work and Leisure

Set a start time, shutdown routine and dedicated work area. Avoid working from bed if possible. Schedule meals and short walks. Lagos offers endless invitations, but saying yes to every evening can damage sleep and concentration. Decide which days are social and protect demanding work periods. Remote freedom works best with deliberate boundaries.

Plan Meetings Geographically

When physical meetings are necessary, group them by area and day. Allow traffic buffers and choose venues with reliable seating, power and manageable noise. Confirm the address and contact person. A video call may be more efficient than crossing the city for a brief conversation. Use travel time consciously rather than treating it as invisible.

Remote Work Security

Use strong device passwords, multi factor authentication and secure backups. Avoid leaving equipment visible in vehicles or shared spaces. Confirm apartment access procedures and lock devices when stepping away. Do not discuss sensitive information loudly in cafés. Share your address only with people who need it and keep emergency contacts accessible.

Budget for a Work Stay

Include accommodation, coworking, mobile data, transport, meals, cleaning and backup equipment. A cheaper apartment may not be economical if you pay daily for alternative workspaces or long rides. Request receipts where needed for reimbursement. Longer stays may have different rates, deposits or utility terms, so obtain the full cost in writing.

Build a Lagos After Work Routine

Use leisure to make the stay sustainable. Try a nearby restaurant, gallery, fitness class, live music event or waterfront walk without turning every night into a major outing. Keep travel distances short on weekdays. Reserve larger experiences for weekends. The goal is to enjoy the city while remaining effective at work.

A Sample Remote Work Week

Use Monday for setup and focused work, Tuesday or Wednesday for coworking and meetings, Thursday for deep work, and Friday for follow ups and an early social plan. Keep Saturday for exploration and Sunday for rest, groceries and preparation. Adapt the pattern to your time zone and team rather than copying a schedule that conflicts with your responsibilities.

Before Booking Your Work Stay

Confirm WiFi, power, desk, chair, noise, cleaning, security, visitor rules and support response. Ask whether the exact unit shown will be provided. Review cancellation terms and test essential systems immediately after check in. Report problems early and in writing. A thoughtful setup lets Lagos become a productive base rather than a daily troubleshooting exercise.

Practical Planning Checklist

1. Choose location around repeated journeys.

2. Request workspace photos.

3. Ask for recent internet details.

4. Carry a second data option.

5. Understand backup power limits.

6. Use coworking strategically.

7. Protect deep work hours.

8. Group meetings by area.

9. Secure devices and files.

10. Schedule rest and exploration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best area to stay in Lagos?

Choose the area closest to most of your confirmed plans. Island and mainland locations serve different itineraries, and convenience usually matters more than a famous neighbourhood name.

Are shortlets suitable for this type of trip?

A serviced apartment can provide privacy, space and kitchen access. Check electricity, water, internet, security, occupancy, support and all property policies before paying.

When should I book?

Book once your dates are firm. Demand is higher around holidays, weddings, concerts and major events, so early enquiries provide more options. Always understand cancellation terms.

How do I reduce time in Lagos traffic?

Group plans by neighbourhood, travel with realistic buffers and avoid crossing the city several times in one day. Keep alternatives close to your accommodation.

What should I confirm before check in?

Confirm the address, contact person, total payment, arrival process, checkout time, access, parking, guest limits, utilities and how urgent problems are reported.

Final Thoughts

A successful trip begins with location, verified bookings and a schedule that respects your real needs. Secure the essentials, prepare backups for the details that matter and leave space to enjoy the city. When choosing accommodation, explore City Spaces and Bookings and compare properties according to your dates, group size, preferred area and purpose.

Working Remotely From Lagos: Where to Stay, Work and Unwind

Shortlet apartments in Ikeja can suit travellers with work, family or transit plans on the Lagos mainland. Choose according to the exact address and your daily route, then verify power, internet, security, access, total cost and check-in arrangements. Proximity on a map does not always translate into a quick journey at every hour.

Who may find Ikeja convenient

Ikeja may be practical for guests whose meetings, family visits or appointments are mainly on the mainland. It can also suit travellers who want to remain within the broader airport corridor, although actual journey time depends on the property and traffic conditions.

List every place you must reach and group them by day. If your plans are mostly on the island, compare the daily journey honestly before deciding that Ikeja is the right base.

Check the specific neighbourhood and access

Ask for enough location detail to assess the surrounding roads, ride-hailing pickup and late-arrival access. If the apartment is within an estate, find out whether guests must be pre-registered and whether vehicles need entry codes.

Confirm parking if you will drive or hire a car. Guests with mobility needs should check stairs, lift access and the walking distance from parking to the apartment.

Review work and household essentials

For business use, verify internet type, data limits, workspace and noise expectations. Ask what backup electricity powers and whether air conditioning, water heating and kitchen appliances can run during an outage.

Check water supply, cleaning frequency, linen, cooking equipment and laundry arrangements. Photographs show style; these practical details determine whether the stay functions well.

Arrival, payment and house rules

Send your expected arrival time and ask how keys or access codes are provided. Late-night arrivals may need additional coordination, especially where estate security must confirm guest details.

Review the total cost and cancellation policy before paying. Understand rules on visitors, smoking, pets, noise and events, and keep payment within the platform’s recognised checkout flow.

Mistakes that can spoil a short stay

One common mistake is booking by décor while ignoring geography. Another is comparing headline nightly rates without reviewing charges and transport. Guests also create avoidable problems by leaving questions about power, WiFi or visitors until arrival.

Do not rely on a verbal promise that conflicts with the written listing or rules. Avoid sending money to an unfamiliar personal account simply because someone offers a lower price. A documented booking process makes responsibilities clearer for both guest and host.

Finally, do not overfill the apartment. Occupancy limits protect comfort, utilities and building rules. Search with the correct number of travellers and choose a layout that genuinely works for everyone.

How to compare shortlisted properties

Give each property a score for location, sleeping arrangement, power, internet, security, access, rules and total value. A five-minute comparison often exposes the difference between an attractive listing and a suitable stay.

Treat missing information as a question, not as a positive answer. ‘Power available’ does not explain the backup system; ‘equipped kitchen’ does not identify appliances; ‘central location’ does not show the route to your appointments.

Balance reviews with current listing details. A review can reveal patterns, but conditions and management may change. The present description, written clarification and current policies should guide the final decision.

A practical booking checklist

Before confirming, compare at least two suitable options using the same dates and guest count. Record the total amount, cancellation terms, electricity arrangement, internet details, cleaning frequency, parking and check-in method. This removes the bias created by a striking first image.

Read every rule that could affect your plans. Confirm the names and number of guests, visitor policy, quiet hours, smoking or pet restrictions and whether commercial photography is allowed. If a point matters to the trip, ask in writing rather than assuming.

Prepare for arrival by saving the booking reference, host contact and access instructions. Share the verified address only with members of your party. On entry, check utilities and report a significant mismatch promptly through the platform.

Do I need identification at check-in?

Many properties or estates require guest identification. Confirm the process in advance for every adult guest.

Can I check in late?

Only if the host’s process permits it. Share your arrival time early and obtain written instructions.

What should remote workers verify?

Internet type and limits, backup power, desk space, mobile signal and a support contact for faults.

Final Thoughts

The best response to a search for shortlet apartments in Ikeja is not a single property recommendation. It is a clear process: choose the right location, verify essential services, understand the full price and rules, and keep the booking documented.
